Q. Frozen shoulder? Left shoulder pain runs up the side of my neck to the
bottom of my jaw and over my shoulder to the top part of my chest. Is
this frozen shoulder? I thought I just pulled something. Its been going on for about 4 weeks.
A. Frozen shoulder is also known as Adhesive Capsulitis. Symptoms include stiffness, pain, and diminished range of motion in the shoulder.
Those with diabetes are at greater risk for frozen shoulder. The cause of this increased risk is still unclear. One theory is that
sugar attaches to collagen which causes an abnormal build up in the shoulder and in turn leads to stiffness. Diabetes can also impact blood vessels and ultimately blood supply
which can lead to damage of connective tissue.
Treatment of frozen shoulder includes controlling blood sugar, physical therapy (exercising the shoulder), and anti-inflammatory medications.
You should check with your doctor to get an official diagnosis. You want to be sure that your symptoms aren't something more
serious (e.g. heart attack or stroke).
